"You have power over your mind—not outside events. Realise this, and you will find strength." — Marcus Aurelius

As a professional guitar teacher in Boston and performing musician, I've learnt that the ancient Stoic wisdom of Marcus Aurelius applies beautifully to the musical journey. This week's extraordinary experience at Logan International Airport reminded me why I'm passionate about teaching guitar students—both locally in Boston and online worldwide—that every performance opportunity is a gift to be treasured.

Celebrating Boston Logan's Support for Local Musicians

I must begin by expressing my profound gratitude to Boston Logan International Airport authorities for creating such wonderful opportunities for local musicians to share their art. What a visionary initiative! By opening their doors to performers, they've transformed travel from a mundane necessity into an enriching cultural experience.

The airport's programme allows musicians like myself to bring live acoustic instrumental music to weary travellers, creating moments of beauty and connection in an otherwise sterile environment. This progressive thinking demonstrates Boston's commitment to supporting local artists whilst enhancing the passenger experience—a brilliant win-win situation that other cities should emulate.

A Global Perspective: From Presidential Performances to Airport Terminals

Throughout my career as a professional guitarist, I've been blessed to perform across the globe—from intimate sessions for world presidents to five-star hotels in major capitals, from charming village pubs in the English countryside to exclusive five-star restaurants where champagne costs more than most monthly salaries. I've entertained high rollers in glittering casinos, watching them casually wager £30,000 on a single hand of blackjack, and I've brought music to leather-clad crowds at atmospheric bikers' bars in Hollywood Beach.

Each venue has offered its unique energy, expectations, and audience. Yet standing at Logan Airport this week, surrounded by the dynamic energy of international travel, I realised something profound: every stage is an opportunity to share the gift of music.

The Magic of Acoustic Guitar in Transit

This week's performance at Boston's airport was nothing short of magical. Positioned strategically near the luggage carousel, I had the privilege of welcoming travellers home with gentle acoustic melodies. After a fulfilling two-and-a-half-hour performance, the real treasure was immeasurable.

Throughout the afternoon, weary passengers—faces initially marked by the fatigue of long-haul flights—began to transform before my eyes. The soft fingerpicking patterns and warm chord progressions seemed to breathe life back into the terminal space, creating an oasis of calm amidst the travel chaos.

"Thank you for the beautiful music," whispered an elderly gentleman collecting his suitcase, his entire demeanour brightening as he paused to listen. A mother with young children beamed whilst her little ones swayed unconsciously to the rhythm, their travel stress melting away. Business travellers, typically absorbed in their devices, found themselves looking up with genuine smiles as the acoustic guitar's natural resonance enveloped them.

One passenger approached during a brief pause between songs: "I've been travelling for eighteen hours, and your music is the first thing that's made me feel human again." Another shared how my instrumental arrangements reminded her of home, bringing profound comfort after a challenging business trip abroad. These moments of authentic connection—passengers transformed from stressed travellers into receptive souls touched by music—reminded me why acoustic guitar possesses such extraordinary healing power.

The Joy of the Musical Journey

The mile-long walk from the car park to my performance spot wasn't an obstacle—it was part of the adventure! Carrying my gear through the airport corridors, I felt the excitement building, knowing I was about to create something beautiful for hundreds of people. The return journey, though physically demanding after breaking down my setup, was filled with the satisfaction of a job well done and hearts touched.

Why I Teach Guitar Students to "Play for Yourself First"

This enriching airport experience reinforced a fundamental principle I share with every guitar student who enters my Boston studio or joins my online guitar lessons: always play for yourself first.

Here's the truth that transforms musicians: if you let the audience dictate the success of your performance, you surrender your artistic integrity. Why? Because 500 people will have 500 different opinions about your performance. Some will adore your blues interpretation, others will wish you'd played more jazz. Some appreciate technical prowess, others crave emotional expression.

The Liberation of Internal Validation

When I teach guitar lessons in Boston or conduct online sessions with students worldwide, I emphasise this life-changing mindset shift. The moment you stop performing for external validation and start playing for your own joy and artistic expression, you become truly free as a musician. This is when the magic happens—when your authentic musical voice emerges.

Standing there amongst the luggage carousels, surrounded by the dynamic energy of international travel, I wasn't focused on whether passengers stopped to listen or how they responded. Instead, I was completely immersed in my own musical journey, finding the same profound satisfaction I've experienced whether playing for heads of state or airport travellers:

  • The pristine sustain of my guitar tone filling the terminal—as beautiful as when it graced grand ballrooms

  • The technical challenges conquered during improvisation—as rewarding as any prestigious performance

  • The meditative flow of losing myself in the music—identical whether the audience wears evening gowns or travel attire

  • The pure joy of making music for its own sake—the ultimate reward for any true guitarist

When You Play for Yourself, Everyone Benefits

Here's the beautiful paradox I teach my guitar students: when you play authentically for yourself, you create the most genuine connection with your audience. Those weary passengers weren't responding to a performance crafted for their approval—they were moved by authentic musical expression that came from within.

Embracing Every Performance Opportunity

Here's what I've learnt from performing everywhere from presidential venues to airport terminals: the magic isn't in the grandeur of the stage—it's in the authenticity of your musical expression rooted in playing for yourself first.

The Philosophy Behind Authentic Performance

This concept of "playing for yourself first" doesn't mean being selfish or ignoring your audience—quite the opposite. When you're true to your own musical vision, you offer something genuine and honest that resonates far deeper than any performance crafted to please others. The weary passengers at Logan weren't moved by calculated crowd-pleasing; they were touched by authentic musical expression flowing from within.

Standing there amongst the luggage carousels, with travellers pausing to appreciate my acoustic instrumental pieces, I experienced the same profound satisfaction I've felt whether playing for heads of state or airport passengers:

  • The pristine sustain of my guitar tone filling the terminal—as beautiful as when it graced grand ballrooms

  • The technical challenges conquered during improvisation—as rewarding as any prestigious performance

  • The meditative flow of losing myself in the music—identical whether the audience wears evening gowns or travel attire

  • The privilege of making a living through music—regardless of whether appreciation comes in applause or quiet smiles

Essential Lessons from Airport Performance for Guitar Students

This enriching experience offers valuable insights I share in my guitar lessons in Boston and online coaching:

1. Grace Under Any Circumstances

Whether you're performing for dignitaries in palatial settings or welcoming travellers at an airport terminal, your commitment to musical excellence remains unwavering. I've maintained the same professional standards playing for presidents as I did creating beauty for airport passengers this week. I teach my guitar students that consistency of character defines a true musician.

2. Finding Joy in Every Musical Moment

The mile-long journey with equipment wasn't hardship—it was anticipation building towards musical connection. Every professional guitarist experiences these practical aspects that build resilience and deepen appreciation for performance opportunities.

3. Internal Scorecard Over External Validation

This week's airport performance wasn't defined by audience size or venue prestige any more than presidential performances were defined by their grandeur. True success lies in your personal satisfaction with the music you've created, the technical growth you've achieved, and the authentic expression you've shared—whether performing for world leaders or weary travellers.

Why This Global Experience Enhances My Guitar Teaching

These diverse performance experiences—from the most prestigious venues to the most humble yet meaningful settings—directly enrich my teaching methodology. When I work with guitar students in Boston or through online lessons, I bring authentic insights that span every possible performance scenario.

From intimate acoustic sessions in cosy pubs to the dynamic energy of airport terminals, I've discovered that the core principles of great musicianship remain constant: authenticity, technical excellence, and genuine care for your audience. This global perspective allows me to prepare my guitar students for any stage life might offer, with confidence and joy.

My Teaching Philosophy: Authentic Musicianship

I incorporate principles of authentic self-expression and internal validation into my guitar instruction because they create fulfilled, confident musicians:

  • Play for yourself first: Authentic expression creates the deepest connection with audiences

  • Embrace internal validation: Your own musical satisfaction is the truest measure of success

  • Find joy in the process: Every chord progression, every scale exercise, every breakthrough moment becomes meaningful when approached with authenticity
